In April of 2008, a group of local parents held a public meeting to see if other families were interested in having the option of a Montessori education for their children in Oceanside. Without a local school, families would have to commute to Nanaimo or Comox for Montessori programs.
The meeting was a huge success, and the parent group worked hard to find a way to bring quality Montessori to Oceanside. We joined forces with Nanaimo (Discover) Montessori School, established in 1975, to ensure that the policies, procedures and administration of the school would be completed smoothly and professionally. Most importantly, however, we joined with the Discover Montessori School to ensure that the Montessori offered in Oceanside was up to the highest standard on Vancouver Island.
Since October 2008 the school opened in the daylight basement of St. Mark's Anglican Church in Qualicum Beach, and has flourished operating with a waiting list of families wishing to enrol. In April 2011, the school moved to its current home in Errington, opening with one classroom and plans to open a second classroom in January 2013. The school's goal is to expand to a school of 45, including elementary students, over the coming years. UNtil then, we have an informal parent carpool to the elementary program at Discover Montessori School in Nanaimo.
