The Montessori Classroom

In the Montessori classroom each child experiences the excitement of learning by choice. During the three-year stay in the primary program, the children perfect their natural abilities for learning.  They are invited by the classroom activities and the teacher to learn.  The children follow their own interests, when they are uniquely ready.

The classroom has five learning areas:

“And so we discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being.”

                ~ Maria Montessori

4)  Language:

The language program includes vocabulary, pre-reading exercises, reading and writing.

It follows the young child’s natural language development.

Nature:

In Montessori education we believe that the classroom extends to the outside.  Learning about the earth, the plants and the animals is integral to the program.

At Oceanside Montessori School we provide an environment for our children where they can join in hands-on exploration and discovery in a natural environment, and experience the world with a sense of wonder.

Nature is a wonderful teaching area. The observation, classification, and communication skills that develop in the study of nature lead to the skills and dispositions children need to succeed in school and in life.

2)  Sensorial:

Specially designed sensorial equipment invites the child to explore the senses, for it is through the senses that the young child gathers information for later use.  Sound matching or colour matching activites are examples.

3)  Mathematics:

The child uses concrete materials for learning quantity and sequence in the mathematics area.  Later, by combining and comparing this material, the child demonstrates to him/herself addition, multiplication, subtraction and division.  Mathematics is learned with the use of all the senses, thus making the abstract concepts real for the child.

5)  Cultural Arts:

Cultural subjects such as science, art, music, geography, and pre-history enrich the child’s vocabulary and experience of the world around them.

1)  Practical life:

These are activities that provide opportunity for refinement of

movement. These activities develop coordination, concentration,

sense of order and independence. Examples of practical life

activities include: pouring beans, then graduating to pouring

water, snack preparation, and tool use.
